about

This song has proven to be very popular over the years, to my absolute surprise. It's one of the few tunes from this album that Half Zaftig still pulls out at live shows. Funny thing is, when we were recording it, I thought it was horrible.

Well, I liked everything but the vocals. And I think when I hear this now (I'm writing this in 2009), I can hear how tentative the vocal performance is, how unsure of myself I am. I was really just learning how to sing back then. It doesn't help that the tempo is in SLOW. MOTION. I think I'd notch up the BPM a bit if I were recording this today.

The drums on this sound unbelievable, and Chris would have nailed this song in one take if he hadn't broken a snare drum head halfway through. But he nailed it on the second.

The song combines my deep appreciation for guitarists Ty Tabor and Steve Morse. The middle section breakdown is an obvious nod to King's X's "Pleiades" and is really fun to stretch out on live.

lyrics

One lump or two is the question
You know me - I always want more

So how come I’m still dumbfounded to find
Yet another closed door

(Day by day…)
My patience slips away

Go ahead and do what they tell you, it’s clear
That’s what you want to do

“Read your cue cards like a good little boy,
We’ll make you next year’s toy, you follow?”

Oh, I work so hard
Somebody throw me a bone
What do I have to do
Who do I have to screw
Somebody tell me

Dredge it all up again
Remind me of the taste of your silver spoon

Enjoy your stay in your new tax bracket
I hope you can hide who you are

I work so hard
