about

"5240" is not an album, per se. It is an experiment I'm conducting this year - writing, recording, and releasing a new song every week for the entirety of 2009. If I'm successful, that means I'll have made 52 new songs in one year. I don't think I've ever finished ten songs in one year before.

With the completion of this "volume", I've already beaten that record.

This is a collection of the first 25% of the project. I'm grouping them in this way to make it easier for people who are interested, but maybe late to the project, to be able to download the year's output thus far in one big lump. I'll make a new "volume" every quarter.

This volume is called "Winter" mostly because it was winter while I worked on these tunes. Not a very original name, I know, but it is descriptive, at least.

Most of these songs were recorded by me in my apartment. Two of them feature my rock trio Half Zaftig ("Help Is On The Way" and "Sometimes Just Makin' Out Can Be Fun (Sometimes)"). On those songs, I still recorded all my parts at my place, while Pete Johnston and Lizzy Daymont did theirs at various locations. A few tracks have a couple of guest performers.

Except for the two HZ tunes, I mixed everything. I have no real experience with engineering recordings, or mixing them - and I think you can hear me improving as the weeks wear on.

I hope you can find some songs you like in here, and I'd love to see you come by Monday mornings to www.shawnfarley.com as each new song is "released." There's still 39 more tunes to go.

Track Name: Help Is On The Way
Help is on the way
Do you know how I know
I know, I know
Do you know how I know that...

Help is on the way
Do you know how I know
I know, I know
Hey, what's that
See that light, it's blinking

Help is on the way
See the light, it's blinking
Track Name: Squandered All My Time
End run
Around the bend
Know that
I can't attend
Tell me
What just happened
Plans laid
By mice and men

I feel like I've squandered all my time
I feel like I've wasted all my time

Don't ask
What could have been
Too much
Of hard thinkin'
I doubt
The where and when
No fear
Though I'm sinkin'

There are things I cannot share with anyone

Maybe
It's for the best
Grown up
I'm used to this
Love is
Discouraging
Don't try
To let me in
Track Name: The Last Time We Talked
Things didn't go so well
The last time we talked
I been thinkin' and dwellin'
On how it all went down

I got pretty mad at you
The last time we talked
'Cause you didn't even try
To argue well

Somewhere you lost your way
You washed away any semblance of
Anything that's true

Please don't say I'll understand someday when I'm older

I don't want you to think badly of me
I'd hate to think those cross words
Were the last ones that you'll ever hear me say
Next time you hear this, I could be gone
You never know
Track Name: Lake Water (Hot And Cold)
It's dark and murky
I can't see the bottom of the lake
It's too brown and muddy
And I'm used to the clear and chemical blue
Of the pool I left back home

I wanna do a cannonball
I can't, I'm afraid to
What if something's alive in there?
There must be something alive in there
'Cause it's a lake, not a pool
Lake water, hot and cold

I don't want to be here
I don't like sleeping in the woods at night
Sinister creatures all around me, everywhere
Some of them are wearing uniforms

I jumped in the water
(The way the temperature is changing is disconcerting me)

I wish the days would go a little faster
I wish that Saturday would come
Come on Saturday, Saturday please come
Saturday, Saturday won't you hurry up and get here

Momma's gonna get me, yeah my Momma's gonna pick me up
Just gotta hang on, gotta hang on tight

I didn't want to come here
Suck it up, you've gotta build some character
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, is what they say
Or it might just try and kill again

Don't you fall behind
Don't get caught
At the end of the line
Track Name: Busy Girl
I'm gonna miss her on Monday
Tuesday too
Depends on the weather
On Wednesday she is working
So alone I'll be lurking
It cannot be helped
I can't believe that it's Thursday
And there's no word, not even a message
I'll surely see her on Friday - wait, something's up
She sends her regrets

'Cause she's a busy girl, busy girl

So now it's been at least three weeks
Or maybe a month - since the last time I saw her
I sent another long email
I know that she read it, I got the receipt
Now I know how it's looking
You think I'm a fool
It's not always like this
I guess I see some potential, so here I wait
Wonder what's on TV

Now she's coming 'round
What can I do to make it worth her while
She's so tightly wound, wound up, wound up
Now she's coming 'round
What can I do to make it worth her while
She's got nowhere to go but down, down, down, down, down
Track Name: I Like You More Than You Do
I see that you're taking after
everyone who ever brought you down
Took 'em at their word
every insult that you heard, now you'll double down
'Cause that's your way

You don't need anybody's help
'Cause you know
Just how fucked you are

I like you more than you do

I'm not exactly blameless
I walked into your frame of reference on my own
Couldn't help but wonder
Turns out it was a blunder should be left alone
But that's OK

You don't need anybody's help
'Cause you know
Just how fucked you are
You don't need anybody else
'Cause you know
Just how fucked you are

I like you more than you do

I'm not special, you're not special
Nobody's special, we're all just taking our turn

All that said I want you to know that I very much love all the time I spend with you
Track Name: Fragmentary
Now what?
I hate the things I know
Remember
To keep yourself a memento

And maybe
Things will all turn around
I'm sleeping
With my ears plugged up to block the sound

How come them walls are poundin'?
Don't they know? Don't they know?
I'll have to teach some manners
They'll see who's friend or foe

Yeah, sure
You're beautiful
But it's not enough
To keep me here anymore (bye bye)

It's over
The life that you got used to
A chapter
That ended before you knew it was through

What do you mean, it's OVER?
Nobody asked me nuthin'
Why don't I get my say-so?
Who's life is this I'm livin'?

Stuck here in solitary
Up on the mountain-top
There's no way you can find me
So don't you even try
My mind has turned to jelly
Ev'rything fragmentary
I must'a missed the announcement
Last one out, turn off the lights

You know
You needed a push out the door
I guess so
But it would've been nice not to be so poor

I done lost all my money
The state won't lend a hand
Too bad I was a good boy
Make this my reprimand

Stuck here in solitary
Up on the mountain-top
There's no way you can find me
So don't you even try
My mind has turned to jelly
Ev'rything fragmentary
I must'a missed the announcement
Last one out, turn off the lights
Sick with the dysentery
Time to be lookin' for
Space in the cemetary
Man, them prices sho' is high
My mind has turned to jelly
Ev'rything fragmentary
I must'a missed the announcement
Last one out, turn off the lights
Track Name: A Really, Really, Really Bad Idea
I know that you are tired
And I know that you're upset
There's no good news for you
Or anybody else

If you're thinking about
Throwing yourself off a really tall building, wait!

I urge you first to think twice
Maybe three or four times max
'Cause it's really going to hurt
When you hit the bottom (hit the bottom SPLAT)

On the long fall down
You'll have a lot of time to think to yourself...

This was a really, really, really bad idea
This was a really, really, really bad idea
I wish I'd had a moment
To think this one through
It was a really, really, really bad idea
Track Name: Sometimes Just Makin' Out Can Be Fun (Sometimes)
She's some kind of mystery
Old forgotten history
Never thought I'd get this chance
Improbable circumstance
Now hold on there
It gets stranger
As snow falls down
On fake mangers
What can you do, what can you say
It's fifteen years to the day

Who are you and what have you done...

Just remember this...
Sometimes just makin' out can be fun (sometimes)

Price is right, the price is wrong
Bob Barker won't be 'round long
Wish I could have spun the wheel
Made a bid and kept things real
Funny how once again
I'm jumpin' out my own skin
What can I do, what can I say
I guess I'm put together this way

Who are you, and what have you done with my libido
I still can't believe that I turned you away
I had hoped there could be a way to be together
But if you can't go there
Well, I understand

We pivot on it
We can't avoid it
Will we surrender?

If everything goes the way I want
I'll be spending lots of time with you naked
If everything goes the way I want
I'll be spending all my time with you naked

Who are you, and what have you done with my libido
I still can't believe that I turned you away
I had hoped there could be a way to be together
But if you can't go there
Well, I understand

Just remember this...
Sometimes just makin' out can be fun (sometimes)
Track Name: Esther Hurts My Head
I got a pain like a soreness
Will still be there in the morning
She's gonna bend like a tall tree
Make my objection feel paltry

See that's a ring on her finger
And normally I wouldn't linger
She wave at me like the ocean
Is that the way she is with everyone?

She don't know it, but she's messin' with my head again
(What about it?)

She got a face for the ages
She got me breakin' down in stages
Got a hammer, God of Thunder?
Please whack me with it, put me under

I shouldn't dare to repeat this
Better buried in a crevice
Somewhere far away from we two
Don't wanna tell you 'cause I know you

She don't know it, but she's messin' with my head again
(What about it?)
I'm not mad, I'm not mad at her, no

Esther hurts my head

Sally Forth into wonder
Happy thoughts torn asunder
Got a pain in my shoulder
Every day getting older

Trapped here in a thimble
This Jack can't be nimble
Next Sunday I'll see you
11th hour will teach you

Came here again for some seconds
Thirds, fourths and remembrance
Imagine me underneath you
Name our children: Monique, Lou

You know you gonna be abandoned
Tossed aside again at random
You're gonna wish you had choices
Don't forget where your voice is

You sold your soul on the sly
Who can blame you in times like these?
The damage won't be the same as it used to be
You know the standards have changed

There will be some who ask why
They'll come in bearing their own hypotheses
You know the standards have changed

Esther hurts my head
Track Name: Gratitude (for Lucy)
Gratitude is what I feel right now

Some days I'm sad
But then I start to smile
When I think of you

Your mom
Your dad
The best people that I've ever met
And I've met a few

Lucy

Can't wait to show you
The cool stuff we got here
Can't wait to give you a piggy-back ride
Or read to you before you sleep at night

You'll make things
You'll sing songs
When you laugh it'll light up the world
And I'll laugh with you

We'll find out if you like butter
We'll put a buttercup under your chin
So we can know for sure

Lucy

Things seem so much better
And you're not even here yet
I'll sneak you a snickerdoodle after dinner at Capon
And we'll make a wish upon a dandelion

Lucy

There's so many snow angels
Waiting for you to make them
This can't be a bad world as long as you're in it
My heart's so full, it's all because of you
Track Name: Things Look Bleak
I never clipped no coupons like my mama did, but
Maybe it's time to start
I never worried 'bout whether or not something was on sale
Maybe it's time to start

Won't somebody save me
Save me from this nightmare

No matter what you're thinking
Certain roads are closed to you now
No matter what you're feeling
Certain roads are closed to you now
Yeah, 'cause things look bleak

I never put no money away into no 401K
Maybe it's time to start
I never really believed that a "rainy day" would come to be
Maybe it's time to start

It's time to start
Woke up again this morning
Awakened by the same old nightmare

All your careful best-laid plans
Weren't worth all the time you spent
It don't matter that you played fair
'Cause the game was always rigged
You never thought you'd wonder
Where your next meal's coming from
That was something for those "other people"
Who couldn't make it on their own
So now you're pushing 40
You're gonna be moving home with Mom
And you wonder how you lost control
And how the bad guys won
Track Name: I Like You More Than You Do (CLEAN)
I see that you're taking after
everyone who ever brought you down
Took 'em at their word
every insult that you heard, now you'll double down
'Cause that's your way

You don't need anybody's help
'Cause you know
Just how f@!?!d you are

I like you more than you do

I'm not exactly blameless
I walked into your frame of reference on my own
Couldn't help but wonder
Turns out it was a blunder should be left alone
But that's OK

You don't need anybody's help
'Cause you know
Just how f@!?!d you are
You don't need anybody else
'Cause you know
Just how f@!?!d you are

I like you more than you do

I'm not special, you're not special
Nobody's special, we're all just taking our turn

All that said I want you to know that I very much love all the time I spend with you
